Laurel’s friend “Mayim”

Recently, it seemed as though Laurel might have an imaginary friend. She kept talking about her friend “Mayim.” I’m guessing on the spelling, since Laurel can’t spell, but that’s what it sounded like she was saying. She would say, “I saw my friend Mayim today.” We had no idea who she was talking about.

At the park one day, one of us asked her, “Is Mayim here right now?” Laurel said, “Yes.” I said, “Where?” She pointed to a woman we didn’t know.

I thought for a few minutes.

“Laurel,” I said, “Do you mean ‘ma’am?'”

I explained, roughly, what “ma’am” means.

Fast-forward to yesterday, when Laurel’s babysitter, M., couldn’t come babysit because she was sick. Laurel was explaining to Devin that M. is her husband. She also apparently told him that she has another husband.

When they got home last night, I asked Laurel, “So, is M., your husband?”

“Yes,” Laurel said. “But I have TWO husbands.”

“Who’s your other husband?” I asked.
