Don’t panic

… That silence you hear is the sound of us assessing our apartment for what needs to be changed, built, bought or thrown away before the baby arrives, and us being stunned at the mountain of work ahead of us.

Also, we have no reliable sources of information on whether it’s possible to get by easily in San Francisco with two adults, a newborn, and no full-size passenger car of our own. We have car-share and rentals for when we need one; the last time we drove Devin’s car (a two-seater) anywhere was sometime in early August, so “when we need one” hasn’t been terribly often. I suggested we ask people in our neighborhood, but Devin pointed out that all of them are firmly affixed to their vehicles despite the easy access to public transit here. We’d like to be non-environment-destroying parents here, but we’d also like to be practical. And we’d like to think we can do both at once.

P.S. We found a midwife!

Are you guys planning on babywearing? Because as a city resident who does a fair amount of walking, I’ve gotta say that it beats all hell out of those mega-wide strollers that the rest of the world shells out $900 for.
Plus, if you guys are babywearing, I can buy you something really fun for a virtual shower gift. ;)

Also, we did very little prior to Fish’s arrival. We painted her room, we got a bouncy seat, co-sleeper, and a swing. I didn’t even buy diapers, and it’s a good thing, as she was too big for newborn diapers. It’s only now that she’s a toddler and actually spending more time in her room that we’ve done stuff like put up shelves and hang pictures. We didn’t buy a crib until she was a good 6 months old – she slept in the co-sleeper or the still-handy pack ‘n’ play until then.

Great news about the midwife. That’s probably a load-off, allowing you to focus on the greater tasks of family planning!
